Known to be one of the oldest protestant churches in Malaysia, the Evangelical Lutheran Church is a prominent house of worship among Christians in the Klang Valley. The church is located in Brickfields, one of the most rapidly developing townships of Kuala Lumpur and home to KL Sentral, the main transportation hub of the country today. Brickfields has grown from a sleepy town to become a major and modern town which is very busy and dynamic today.
As a church, ELCM is involved in providing religious services for its members who come from all walks of life while it is involved in community services that help improve the lives of the society at large. Among ELCM’s community service projects includes the establishing of the centre to help epileptic patients in Hutan Melintang in Perak.
As the name implies, the Evangelical Lutheran Church is a Lutheran church which is part of the protestant movement. ELCM is actually a branch part of the former Tamil Evangelical Lutheran Church. The church was set up around the period of the 19th and 20th century when there were large groups of Indian immigrants who were brought to British Malaya to work in the plantations due to its growing opportunities in that sector then.
This group of Indian immigrants were Tamil speaking people which includes a group of Tamil Lutheran Christians then. They would then be the community responsible for setting up the first congregation in 1907 which would then be known as the Tamil Evangelical Lutheran Church or TELC.
This practice is still very evident to present day where the ELCM still offers services in Tamil and in English Language. The church recently introduced Bahasa Malaysia in its service to cater for more members in this language. As part of the 4 Lutheran bodies in Malaysia, ELCM is actively involved in the spreading of the gospel and worship sessions for its members. Besides providing the platform for Christians to carry out their faith, ELCM is known for its missions that transcend geographical boundaries including heading into countries like Myanmar, Bangladesh, Indonesia and most notably into India.
